Job: Screenshots of all Chaos Maps w/ Grid Lines

This project is something that should benefit Chaos, the MWLL wiki, and possibly the map repos. There used to exist a blog called mwllmaps.com for custom maps. It was a place to showcase maps and provide download services. It has long since gone offline. The old forum is still up but no one knows for how long. That was the primary place for new map information. We need high quality pictures or screenshots of CHaos March maps. The trouble is we cannot just lift it from the forum, old blog, or the map files. We need specific maps with the grids on them for the project relating to Chaos. The other places could still use the mini map or pictures of the maps. There is also a need for a identifying screenshot. I would be happy to set aside some time to use the server to help with this project. Finally, this information could also help for any future enhanced stats page to showcase the current map being played. Yes, its a good amount of work but it could be done qucikly on a day with a couple of volunteers. The usefulness for the community would be worth the work I think.

Example Work. The wiki has the stock maps rather well summed up. They are missing the grid lines that we need for the event. But this is the information we are looking for as an example.

Updating: Grid lines not needed right away. A single high rez of the mini map or overlay as found in the map folder is fine. We can add grid lines easily using this tool afterwards for a second picture.

Batch coverting the minimap .dds to png or jpeg should be doable. I’ll try that tonight.

Every map from the map pack now has the mini map extracted. Each image was converted to png. This does not include stock maps, but those can be pulled from the wiki. The grid lines can be added using that online program (finding link). The following link has the images in a zip file.

  2. Need to add grid lines, suggest using this tool to do it http://gametactic.org/generate_grid.html
    The grid is to be created as a seperate image. The online tool uses the grid image to overlay the mini map image.

  1. Icons? Since mwll does not have any ? We might use the old and specific ones for other games.
  2. Submit game name, map names, map png image, map png? grid image, and any icons to this thread, or emailed or forum post to game tactics.

@Meldric I have not had luck getting a response from the gametactics site. I am not sure if my email went through. Would you suggest I post on the forums there?

Yeah, Forum is a possibility! I will also fire a mail to the guy I was already in contact with. Just in case…
I have written a mail as well. Will see if there is a response. Meanwhile, the forum might be a valid option for a secondary channel.

Update: After reading through this again I think this is gonna take a little while. Also note to myself that TC Palisades, TC Outskirts need to be added.

Okay thanks to Meldric we have this process underway again. Here is what we need straight from the gametactics project:

I will do most of work here tonight but I will need help for generating these html? thingies. I will link the images to the gametactics developer tonight.

Following steps are needed for a new game:

Most importantly, I need some solid map images, doesn't really matter which format. (png/jpg is most common)

Create a map index file like this: https://github.com/karellodewijk/wottactics/blob/master/views/MWO_maps.ejs (Only value is required, data-size is so the distance measurement works, the grid option is to show a toggleable grid)

Collect some icons, icons preferably in png format and with a transparant background. (for example: https://github.com/karellodewijk/wottactics/tree/master/public/icons/MWO). They probably should be roughly in the same scale. If you can, use a pretty high quality/resolution, it's always easier to scale down. If you want people to select any color for their icon, their primary color should be white with a black border, but you can mix in some greyscales or colors in there, they'll just blend with the selected color.

You can use any icon from any other game it’s applicable.

In processing I’ll generate icons that are roughly 100px high with the width to scale and thumbnails that are 50px high and put them into spritesheets, but you don’t need to worry about that.

Create an icon template file that looks a little bit like this: https://github.com/karellodewijk/wottactics/blob/master/views/MWO_icons.ejs. On top are the main icons grouped by row. Bellow are the icons that appear in tabs.

You can apply an additional scaling factor by setting data-scale-. By default people will be able to select a color for their icons, if you want them to appear as is, use data-no_color=“true”.

Give me the name of the game (for the title), a shortened version and an icon that represents the game and sort of works on 22px scale (for the select game menu). Optionally a banner.

Each map has a DDS or JPG file shipped alongside the manifest XML, a program could be made to generate minimaps therefrom
The problem is, the minimap is only a section of the image shipped (and there is info in the text file what section exactly)
If i had time i could do it (after the keymapper)

I got the mini maps all up to date with cleaned up image file names.

Icons? I think we’ll re use MWO ones that already are on the site.

So steps 1-2 are done until when if we get time to update images using fire hounds suggestion.

Right… um… this is the part where we are in trouble. 182 maps to process if we do them all. Chaos specific that is 92 maps. We have to stick icons using html code? I can input the map names but the rest is above my pay grade. Here is some example code from the MWO doc. I think an mwll adaption would be like. This is the step that will hold things up.
